On Saturday, June 20, Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk met with U.S. Senator, Chairman of the Committee on Armed Services John McCain.

The Prime Minister reminded about the yesterday's statements by President Vladimir Putin concerning Ukraine and the war, waged against our country, "Putin is an aggressor. And Russia has to pay the price for the illegal annexation of Crimea and invasion into Donetsk and Luhansk. Russia should act as permanent member state of the UN Security Council and not violate international law and not to endanger the whole world."

"We are different people and different states," he stressed.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk said that the U.S. is "the international leader in the fight for Ukraine’s independence": "We appreciate this and count on your support."

During the meeting they discussed a bill, recently approved by the U.S. Senate, on providing defensive weapons to Ukraine.

Senator McCain underlined that this decision was taken without any debate, and it was supported by representatives of both parties: "No one congressman objected to a bill on provision of defensive weapons."

Arseniy Yatsenyuk and John McCain also discussed cooperation between Ukraine and the USA in the energy sector.

The Prime Minister of Ukraine reminded that last year the Cabinet of Ministers had begun a reform in the Ukrainian energy sector. He thanked the foreign partners for their support in "making Ukraine more energy efficient and more energy independent."

"On the one hand, the Government is working to develop an effective energy policy and bring tariffs closer to market rates, on the other - we need to provide subsidies to those who need it",  Arseniy Yatsenyuk emphasized.
