On the 19th of January 2017 the Deputy Minister for the
European Integration Olena Zerkal
held a meeting with representatives of the Diplomatic corps in order to provide
international community with the information concerning the recent case filed
by Ukraine against Russian Federation in the International Court of Justice and
an arbitral tribunal under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the
Sea.
During the meeting the overview of the International Court
of Justice Case was presented, which explains Ukraine’s strategy for defending
its sovereign rights violated by unlawful actions of the Russian Federation in
Crimea and eastern Ukraine.
Olena Zerkal
explained that Ukraine’s ICJ case is based on systematic violations by Russian
Federation of the International Convention for the 1999 Suppression of the
Financing of Terrorism and the 1965 International Convention on the Elimination
of All Forms of Racial Discrimination provisions.
The issue concerning organization of the arbitral tribunal
under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea was also a point
of the meeting’s agenda.
After the discussion and answering questions there is a
strong hope that all countries that follow the international rule of law will
be supportive of the Ukraine’s efforts to stand up to Russian violation of the
international law.
