Italy is our good partner and we stand ready to deepen cooperation in the political and economic plane, says Volodymyr Groysman

Italy has been and remains a good partner for Ukraine, and Kyiv expresses readiness to deepen and fully develop bilateral relations in the political and economic planes. Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman stated during a meeting with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy Angelino Alfano. It was the first meeting of the Italian diplomat with the Head of Government of Ukraine.

"Italy is our traditional partner. We have a lot in common, and we have an opportunity to build our good common future," said Volodymyr Groysman.

He thanked the Government of Italy for the ongoing support of Ukraine in the matter of the protection of territorial integrity and counteraction to Russian aggression. The Head of Government stressed this issue acquires particular significance in the context of Italy's Chairmanship of the OSCE in 2018.

"For my country, the situation in Ukraine is always in the limelight. We recognize the macroeconomic progress in Ukraine and see the challenges your country is facing. So, we are ready to provide you all the necessary assistance," said Angelino Alfano.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the progress of reforms in Ukraine and the Government's economic plans for 2018. Among those the key direction is the large-scale privatization under the new legislation. Volodymyr Groysman invited Italian companies to take part in the sale of assets, and also offered to assess the prospects of joint implementation of projects in industry and energy. At that, the energy sector, according to the Head of Government, may be of interest both in terms of joint work on the modernization of the Ukrainian gas transmission system and of the participation of the Italian business in the projects of gas production in Ukraine.

"The economy is demonstrating a growing trend and will grow further, hence we invite the Italian side to cooperation," said Volodymyr Groysman.

In response, Angelino Alfano stressed that recently the Italian export to Ukraine had increased by 20%, while Ukrainian to Italy - by 24%. "This is a good indicator. And with such performance, our partnership will fast grow into strategic," assured the Foreign Minister of Italy. "We rely on cooperation in the sectors of infrastructure, energy, innovations."

Background

Italy enters the ten largest trading partners list of Ukraine. Our country supplies a large range of agricultural products to Italy, and is number one supplier for crops such as sunflower and rapeseed oil, corn, and oil meal. On the results of 2016, the trade turnover in the segment of agro-products between the two countries exceeded US$ 780 million. Over 11 months of 2017, the volume of Ukrainian agroexport to Italy amounted to US$ 796.3 million.

Over 40 Ukrainian NGOs in Italy deal with issues of cultural-humanitarian and volunteering activities to provide support to Ukraine. The Ukrainian community in Italy has 7 sunday schools, over a dozen online editions and websites.
