Ukraine and Latvia are deepening political dialogue and keen on increasing mutual trade turnover - meeting of Heads of Government

Ukraine and the Republic of Latvia strengthen the political dialogue and consider the possibility of significant deepening of economic cooperation. This statement was made during the meeting between Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman and Prime Minister of Latvia Māris Kučinskis. The meeting was held in Riga within the framework of the Prime Minister’s official visit to Latvia.

"Ukraine is an important country for Europe. We support Ukraine and we are pleased that we have a serious economic partnership and cooperation. You can rely on us," the Prime Minister of Latvia stressed.

The sides emphasized the volume of mutual trade in goods and services increased by 27% last year with a positive for Ukraine balance of USD 102.6 million. The work of the Intergovernmental Ukrainian-Latvian Commission and the restoration of the work of  the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) in Kyiv will allow to step up cooperation between the countries.

"It is very important to develop our bilateral relations in different spheres, the Head of Ukrainian government stressed, We appreciate friendship and I'm glad we have good trading figures. I think we can set up ambitious goals  in this direction ", Volodymyr Groysman accentuated.

The Heads of Government placed a special emphasis on opportunities for investment and innovation cooperation. In this context, Volodymyr Groysman outlined key government plans for economic changes in the country, and briefed the counterpart on interim results of fundamental reforms initiated in the social sphere and in the direction of deregulation and improvement of the business climate in Ukraine.

The sides singled out agricultural sector and logistics as promising areas of innovation cooperation, in particular, the use of the Zubr container train, which connects the ports of Ilyichivsk, Odessa and Yuzhny with the ports of Riga, Ventspils, Liepāja and Tallinn.

"We are very interested in bringing our infrastructural capabilities closer," Volodymyr Groysman claimed.

The parties expressed their interest in interregional cooperation and assistance by Latvia in the process of implementation of reforms in Ukraine. On the outcomes of the talks, the Prime Ministers took part in signing of two international documents - the protocol of intentions between the Ministries of Education and Science of Ukraine and Latvia on the work of Ukrainian school in Riga, as well as the main agreement on cooperation between Riga Technical University and the National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute".

"The time when it is possible to settle something through competition has gone. Innovation, education and business opportunities are at the forefront. I am pleased to admit that Ukraine and Latvia pay peculiar attention to education issues," the Head of Government of Latvia commented on the event.


On the outcomes of 2017 the trade turnover between Ukraine and Latvia made up USD 462 million. Key export items are mineral fuels, oil, boilers and machinery, organic food, food products, metals. Import items include pharmaceuticals, light industry goods, land transport vehicles.

In late January of 2018, Ukraine and Latvia agreed on a comprehensive bilateral Program of cooperation in the sector of agro-industrial complex for 2018-2019, which provides for bilateral cooperation on harmonization of Ukrainian legislation with the EU laws, development of rural territories, green tourism, cooperation in veterinary and phytosanitary sectors, fishing industry, in forestry, etc.
