Second Meeting of the Preparatory Committee for the Eighth BWC Review Conference takes place in Geneva

As reports Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the UNO Branch and other International Organizations in Geneva, on August 08 12, 2016 the Second Meeting of the Preparatory Committee for the Eighth Review Conference of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production and Stockpiling of Bacteriological (Biological) and Toxin Weapons and on their Destruction (BWC) takes place in Geneva.

Participants are discussing technical and logistical matters related to the carrying out the abovementioned conference (will be held in November 2016), including issues of methods of decision-making and rules of procedure, as well as engaging in the general exchange of views on initiatives and suggestions in the context of finding ways to ensure universalization of the Convention and strengthen its provisions.

Yurii Klymenko, Permanent Representative of Ukraine in Geneva in his statement during the Meeting, in particular, underlined the important role played by the BWC in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, stressed on the necessity of conducting an effective dialogue during the Eighth BWC Review Conference regarding issues related to strengthening and universalization of the Convention, noted the significance of further international cooperation in these spheres, as well as spoke in favor of finding opportunities to reinforce the Implementation Support Unit of this international document.

The delegation of Ukraine together with the US National Academy of Sciences carried out during the Meeting of the Preparatory Committee the side-event titled Supporting Effective BWC Implementation: education, outreach, and policy advice. The event included speakers from the European Academies Science Advisory Council, National Academy of Sciences of Pakistan, the World Academy of Sciences and was commended by the participants of the Meeting.
