Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman commissioned the leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine and the Ukravtodor State Motorway Agency of Ukraine to embark on all necessary preparatory work as soon as possible to begin the construction and repair activities in March already. The Head of Government urged at a special meeting on road infrastructure development.

The Prime Minister reminded that in 2018 the total amount of financing of road construction activities would reach a record sum worth UAH 47 billion. Meanwhile, the Road Fund, which starts operation, as well as active involvement of local authorities and use of growing local resources into road construction programs are aimed to become effective tools for the management of the sector.

"Construction of roads and their safety are our focus. With the onset of the season, we must launch major construction work to provide a breakthrough in the road sector," said Volodymyr Groysman, "Apart from that, we see it necessary to upgrade old and purchase new equipment for construction and maintenance of road infrastructure."

Participants of the meeting noted that in 2017 there had been repaired 2,100 km of roads, being the best performance showing over the past 5 years. The plan for 2018 is even more ambitious and includes measures to restore and build both local and principal roads. First and foremost, it concerns the ‘Go Highway’ corridor, the Lviv-Ternopil-Kherson-Odessa highway project which is to connect the western border with the ports of Ukraine, as well as a number of other important road networks, including those part of international transport corridors in the eastern and southern direction. The aired benchmarks are stipulated for by the medium-term Strategy for the development of the road industry until 2022.
At the same time, the parties agreed to work out mechanisms for stimulating the development of road mechanical engineering industry.

"We see it crucial to conduct an inspection of already built roads and, if necessary, to bring to justice those who have failed to fulfill quality work," said Volodymyr Groysman, "Meanwhile, serious control is required in the system of maintenance of local roads and the use of resources. The most efficient (building) solution should be found for each particular road."

The Head of Government also promised that he would summon a similar meeting with regional leaders in the coming days to determine the level of readiness of local authorities to implement road repair and construction plans.
